Strange Noises or Smells
Let's Find Out What Your Car's Telling You.
Knocking, ticking, squealing, or a burning smell – your car doesn’t make those on purpose. It’s trying to tell you something’s off. Some of it is minor. Some of it is the early warning before a bigger repair. At Greer’s Auto Repair, we’ll track down where it’s really coming from and fix what actually needs fixing – no guessing, no upselling.
What's Your Car Trying to Tell You?
Different sounds and smells point to different problems. Here’s what we hear about most.
Common noises and what they can mean:
- Squealing or screeching when you brake – worn brake pads
- Grinding when you stop – pads worn down to metal
- Knocking or ticking from the engine – low oil, worn parts, or a timing issue
- Clunking over bumps – loose or worn suspension parts
- Humming or growling that changes with speed – tires or wheel bearings
- Hissing under the hood – a leak in the cooling or vacuum system
Common smells and what they can mean:
- Burning rubber – a slipping belt or hose touching something hot
- Sweet, syrupy smell – a coolant (antifreeze) leak
- Hot, oily, or burning smell – an oil leak dripping onto the engine
- Rotten eggs or sulfur – usually an exhaust or catalytic converter issue
- Burning carpet smell when braking – overheating brakes
Some of these are a quick fix. Some are the kind of thing you want caught early. Either way, we’ll figure out which one it is.

Why Tallmadge Drivers Trust Our Diagnostics
A strange noise or smell is easy to guess at and easy to get wrong. We don’t throw parts at a problem hoping one sticks. We use proper diagnostics to find the real cause, then we explain it in plain language so you know exactly what you’re paying for and why. Clear, upfront pricing – no surprises. That’s how we’ve earned the trust of drivers right here in Tallmadge.
Don't Wait for It to Get Louder
That noise or smell isn’t going to fix itself, and small problems don’t stay small for long. Bring it in, or give us a call, and let’s find out what it is before it turns into something bigger.
Strange Noises or Smells FAQs
It depends on the noise. Grinding brakes, loud knocking from the engine, or anything that gets worse as you drive should be checked right away. When in doubt, it’s safer to have us take a look before you keep driving on it.
Burning smells can come from a slipping belt, an oil or coolant leak dripping onto hot engine parts, or overheating brakes. Any burning smell is worth checking soon, since it usually means something is running hotter than it should.
A squeal or screech is often the built-in wear indicator on your brake pads telling you they’re getting thin. If it turns into a grinding sound, the pads are likely worn all the way down and it’s time to come in.
That sweet smell is usually leaking coolant (antifreeze). It’s worth getting checked, because a coolant leak can lead to your engine overheating if it’s left alone.
A rotten-egg smell usually points to an issue with your exhaust system or catalytic converter. We can run a diagnostic to find out exactly what’s going on.
We start by having you describe it, then we test drive the car and inspect the parts that match the symptom. Between the road test and our diagnostic tools, we can pinpoint the real source instead of guessing.

I was stuck in traffic and saw Greer's and decided to call to price out brakes on my 2021 Buick Encore. I was going to have a friend do the brakes, but was very hesitant due to all the electronics involved with my rear brakes. I called on Friday and Monday they were replacing my brakes and rotors.
