What Causes Weak AC or No Heat?
Your air conditioning and your heat run on two different systems, so the fix depends on which one is giving you trouble. Here is what we see most.
Why your AC is not cold:
- Low refrigerant, almost always from a slow leak somewhere in the system
- A failing AC compressor, or a compressor clutch that is not engaging
- A condenser packed with leaves, bugs, or road debris
- A clogged cabin air filter choking off airflow
- A blower motor that is weak or not running at all
- An electrical problem such as a blown fuse, a bad relay, or a failed sensor
Why your heat is not warm:
- Low coolant, usually from a leak in the cooling system
- A thermostat stuck open, so the engine never reaches full operating temperature
- A clogged or restricted heater core
- Air trapped in the cooling system
- A blend door actuator stuck on the wrong setting
- A blower motor or blower resistor that is not moving enough air
Some of these are a quick, inexpensive fix. Others are the early sign of a cooling system problem you want caught before it turns into an overheated engine. Either way, we will tell you which one you are dealing with.
